Grocery Shopping in Albania

Now that we’ve been in Tirana for a couple of weeks, I’ve had a chance to experience a few different types of shopping. The process of simply wandering around a new neighborhood and purchasing things for daily living is always a thrilling part of the honeymoon period as we settle in a new place. Having lived outside of the U.S. for the last 12 years, this is something we’ve had many opportunities to experience. For me, this *never* gets old!

Today, I had the good fortune of wandering around what appeared to be a relatively new part of town. There were a number of packed cafes and restaurants, filled with patrons seated inside and out. There was loads of foot traffic on the pedestrian-only streets. The buildings around the main square were brightly colored in vibrant shades of the rainbow.

Tirana has so many brightly-colored buildings!

And, at the center of it all, was the most amazing collection of stalls, with vendors selling all manner of appetizing and appealing things!

A view from the far corner of the market.

Since a picture really can be worth a thousand words, I’ll just let you feast your eyes on a few paragraphs.

An incredible assortment of nuts and dried fruit

Olives, olives, and more olives!

Summer’s abundance includes figs, cherries, pears, peaches, and apricots.

Some lovely pottery

A variety of local honeys
Demonstrating her 4-needle knitting technique

Eggs are available in several sizes.

Even multiple blends of tobacco are available here!

The vendors were all smiles, offering samples of their wares to tempt me to buy. They welcomed me over with greetings in Albanian, Greek, French, Italian, and even a few in English, too. Wandering through this abundant array of fresh produce made me start to salivate at the possibilities. And this was just the tip of the iceberg! There are even more wonderful specialty shops and stalls to explore, but we’ll save that for another post. I wouldn’t want your eyes to grow bigger than your stomach. *wink, wink*
